The World Islands

What should a collection of man-made islands shaped into the continents of the world be called? What else but the “The World Islands”. Welcome to the man-made cluster of 300 small private artificial islands in the shape of a world map currently being built off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Located 4 kilometers off the shore of Jumeirah, close to the Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid, The World Islands are often mistakenly referred to as the Palm World or the Globe Islands. The idea for building The World Islands was conceived by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Believed to be an engineering odyssey, the idea found immediate takers in the form of Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corp.). Nakheel Properties owns the islands and is also constructing it. The islands are primarily being built by using sand dredged from the sea. The painfully slow process of dredging started way back in 2004 and as per official figures for March 2007, The World Islands is around 90% complete. Once fully completed, it will surely be an incomparable destination having an extraordinary expression of exclusivity. Even while it is being constructed, it is fast becoming a one-of-a-kind destination.

The World DubaiThe 300 small private artificial islands making up The World Islands are estimated to cover a total area of 9 kilometers or 5.4 miles in length and 6 kilometers or 3.6 miles in width. It will be surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater to protect it from the effects of weather and long shore drift. The 300 islands have been divided into four categories - Low Density, Mid-High Density, Resort and Commercial islands. The Low Density islands ensure maximum privacy as they are located on the perimeter of the master plan. The Mid-High Density islands are ideal for residential developments either full time or in the form of a vacation home. The islands earmarked for Resort are dedicated to hotel and resort developments and may also include residential and limited commercial uses. The Commercial islands have been strategically located adjacent to major transportation centers or navigation channels to offer an array of retail venues and varied shopping offerings. Each island ranges from 23,000 m² to 84,000 m² (250,000–900,000 square feet or 5.7–21 acres) in size. Two islands will contain approximately 50–100 m of water between them. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by boat or helicopter. Boat transportation from the mainland will be from the Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah fishing harbors.

Many celebrities are making a rush to own one of The World Islands and some have already booked one which includes Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher. If you too want to own your own island and have famous celebrities as your neighbor, then you will need to fork out around AED 25 million or $ 6.85 million US Dollars. If the price is a bit steep, then don’t worry, each island will be sold to selected private developers who will develop the landscape as per investor specifications and sell them further. This way a single island can have a whole township on it. A centralized system is also being put into place which would provide basic services to occupants of The World Islands by way of utility plants which will be located at service hubs. Each island may be individually responsible for their connection to the distribution and collection mains. Central utilities may be brought from the main land also as an alternative. The promoters of The World Islands have designed it to be a mix of aesthetic beauty and seamless functionality and they expect the islands to be a place where visitors and residents return again and again.
